Figuring out your living room layout can be complicated. It can feel like a puzzle involving chairs, couches, tables, lighting, and rugs. The best solution is to figure out what layout works best for your space and your family. Here are some layout ideas to get you started.
Layout 1: 2 couches + 2 chairs
A classic, this layout has 2 sofas facing each other with 2 chairs. I generally do not recommend buying a sofa and a loveseat since this usually looks a bit off. If you have a fireplace or other focal point in the room, group this layout around the fireplace to create a winner space.
Layout 2: 1 sectional + 2 chairs
If you have the space for it, a sectional is a great buy! They bring on the cozy and give you lots of seating so you always have enough space for everyone. They can also help divide up a larger room into zones. This layout is what I currently have in my living room and I love it!
Layout 3: 1 sectional + 1 chair
Similar to the layout above, this layout also provides ample seating space. This layout might work better for you if the room is a bit smaller and doesn’t have enough room for 2 chairs.
Layout 4: Just chairs
This layout can work beautifully if you have a living room used mainly for entertaining and you don’t need a ton of seating.
Layout 5: 1 couch + 2 chairs
I’m a big fan of having a lot of seating. But if your living room is small or used more as a formal living room, having 1 couch and 2 chairs may be all you need.
Layout 6: 1 couch + poufs
Another layout idea for a small living room can be to have a couch or a sectional with some poufs. This adds seating when you need it but doesn’t take up a lot of visual space.
Here are just a few layout ideas to get you started. There are an infinite number of ways to layout your living room and each space is so different. The main rule to keep in mind in a living room is that you want your layout to create conversation areas. These are furniture groupings conducive to people sitting and talking. Once you finalize the design that works best for you, don’t forget to add rugs, coffee tables, and lighting that work for the space. Enjoy!
