The change in seasons is exciting—out come the cozy sweaters and stylish boots! More importantly, with the yom tov season behind us, now is the perfect time to reclaim some calm and routine in our daily lives. But the actual act of switching your closet can feel like a mountain of laundry and misplaced shoes. Instead of just stuffing summer clothes into bins, let’s treat this seasonal swap as an opportunity to truly organize and refine your wardrobe.
A well-executed closet transition saves you time, reduces clutter, and ensures you start the new season with only the items you genuinely love and wear.

Here are four essential steps for an efficient and stress-free seasonal closet swap.
1. The Great Empty-Out & Edit
You can’t organize what you can’t see. The most efficient way to start is by taking everything out of your closet. Yes, really.
- Edit ruthlessly as you go: Do not let a single item go back into the closet without passing this three-question test:
- Did I wear this last season? (If the answer is no, it’s a strong candidate for donation.)
- Does it fit me and flatter me right now? (If it doesn’t, but you still want to keep it, make sure it moves out of your prime viewing area. Only the clothes that work for you today should be hanging in your main closet.)
- Is it damaged or beyond repair? (If yes, move it to the trash pile.)
- Create Three Piles: You should have three clearly defined areas: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Trash. Be honest with yourself about what needs to go!
2. Prepare Your Off-Season Storage
If your closet is big enough to hold all your clothes, you can definitely skip this step. If it is not big enough, move off season clothing somewhere else.
The goal of seasonal storage is to protect your clothing and maximize space. The storage method should match the item and your available space.
- Wash Everything First: This is non-negotiable. Ensure every summer item is clean and completely dry before storing it. Any perspiration or stains left behind can oxidize and yellow the fabric over the long months in storage.
- Invest in the Right Containers:
- Under-Bed Storage: Look for flat, clear plastic containers or zippered bags.
- Vertical Space (Garage/Attic): Use opaque plastic bins with airtight lids to protect against dust, moisture, and pests. Label the outside with a clear list: “Summer Tops,” “Light Jackets,” etc.
- Avoid Cardboard: Cardboard can attract pests and doesn’t protect against humidity.
3. Curate Your In-Season Wardrobe
Now that your closet is empty, it’s time to intentionally put the new season’s clothes in. Only bring out the items you truly need for the next few months.
- Hang Smart: Use matching hangers (velvet slim-line hangers are great for saving space) for a cohesive and visually calm look. Group items by type (blouses, jackets, skirts) and if you want to be extra, color-code within those groups.
- Prime Real Estate: Reserve the most easily accessible shelf or rod space for the items you wear most frequently (work clothes, favorite skirts, go-to sweaters).
- The Drawer Transition: Before putting your fall clothes in the dresser, use drawer dividers or the “filing fold” method (like Marie Kondo) to store sweaters, and socks vertically. This allows you to see everything you own at a glance and maximizes drawer depth.

4. Systemize Accessories and Footwear
Accessories are often the biggest source of closet clutter because they don’t have a designated home.
- Accessories: Utilize the back of the closet door or the side of your shelving unit for scarves, belts, and hats. Use a multi-hook hanger or a scarf hanger to keep them untangled and visible.
- Footwear: Utilize shoe racks on the floor or over-the-door hanging organizers for daily shoes to maximize space and keep them visible.
- Jewelry Organization: Purchase velvet-lined jewelry trays sized to fit your drawer. These usually come with pre-divided sections for rings, studs, and bracelets.
By following these five steps, you’re not just moving clothes around—you’re organizing your wardrobe for intentional dressing and creating a calmer, more functional morning routine all season long.
Happy organizing! What’s the first cozy item you’ll be pulling out this season?
