Friday was our first snow day here in Monsey. Very exciting but also made my front entryway rather muddy and full of puddles. I don’t have a proper mudroom and I have a rather small coat closet. It got me thinking, now that winter is here, how can I make my front entryway more efficient? Also, how to avoid the coat, boot, glove pileup that is starting to make an appearance. Here’s what I came up with. I hope it helps you keep your entryway more organized, whether you have a mudroom or not.
1. Get a Bench
This will provide a place to take those muddy boots on and off. This way, everyone won’t track their mud all over the house and it will stay contained and easier to clean.
2. Get a Washable Rug
Or an outdoor rug. This way, you won’t be bothered when mud gets tracked into your entryway since it’s easy to clean. Here’s a stylish one for only $6.99. For another budget option, check out this post here.
3. Hang Up Hooks
These can be command hooks or if you’re looking for a prettier option, you can try something like this. Utilize the hooks to hang up scarves, coats, and purses instead of dumping them on the floor.
4. Make Use of (Pretty!) Baskets
These can be placed under the bench or in the coat closet if you have one. Don’t forget to label them! Depending on how much space you have, you can either make a separate basket for each family member, and they’ll put their hat, gloves, and scarf, etc. into their basket. Or, you can divide it into categories (hats, gloves, etc.) This will just depend on how many people are in your family and how much space you have.
5. Get Mudroom-like Furniture
If your entryway is large enough, you can get furniture that has a bench, hooks, storage, etc. like this hall tree. This will really make you feel like you have a deluxe mudroom 🙂
6. Get Shoe Storage
I’m mostly talking to myself here since I have avoided this for a long time since my entryway is very small and narrow. But it can make all the difference when you’re rushing out the door and you can’t find that very small kid’s shoe (I speak from experience.) This one can be stacked so you can customize based on how many people are in your household (and how many shoes they have!)
I hope this post helps you avoid stepping over muddy boots and missing gloves this winter!
