I recently got a new fridge. The french door type of fridge. And while I love the fridge part, the freezer drawer can feel like a big black hole. I am currently in the process of organizing it and I figured I would share all the tips I have for organizing your freezer. With Yom Tov season coming up, our freezers will be so much more functional if they are organized. So read on to hear my best tips for organizing your freezer like a pro!
1. Bins
I love bins in every part of my house-closets, pantry, bathroom-and the freezer is no exception! Make sure to measure first. For a freezer on top, you can use inexpensive Sterilite bins to corral different items. In my old freezer, I used the 16 quart bins (without the lids) to store meat, chicken and fish. I used the smaller ones (with lids so they stacked) to store frozen veggies, different types of dough. Use it to store whatever you normally keep in your freezer. For a freezer drawer, something like this will do the trick. Side by side freezers can be organized using file/magazine folders. Be creative with this! It doesn’t necessarily need to be a bin that’s made for a freezer.
Some bins may seem pricey but bear in mind that you won’t necessarily want everything in bins. Some stuff may be better off without bins so you usually won’t need tons of bins in the end.
2. Categorize
Divide your freezer items into categories based on what you usually have on hand. Common categories include:
- Fruit
- Veggies
- Soup
- Bread
- Meat
- Chicken
- Fish
- Baked Goods
- Ice Cream
Personalize the categories based on your needs.
3. Divide and Conquer
Divide your freezer stash into the bins and categories you have come up with. Make sure to discard packaging if you can since packaging is a huge space waster.
4. Label
No organizing spree is complete without labels. Make sure everything is clearly labeled so you know what it is.
