Urban Living: The Designer’s Guide to Polished Task Lighting

We’ve all been there: you’ve spent months curating the perfect furniture and picking the right paint, but when you actually sit down to read or prep dinner, something feels off. The room looks beautiful, but it isn’t working for you.

Usually, the culprit is a lack of thoughtful task lighting.

In my latest feature for Urban Living Magazine, I dive deep into the second layer of lighting design. While ambient lighting sets the mood, Task Lighting is what makes a space truly functional.

Form Meets Function

Getting task lighting right is about more than just “adding a lamp.” It’s about adding high-end character while preventing the “expensive mistake” of a space that is beautiful but unusable.

Whether you’re in a compact apartment or a sprawling home, the right lighting orchestration can:

  • Turn a lonely corner into a polished reading nook.
  • Make your kitchen prep feel seamless (and shadow-free).
  • Add an architectural element without a full renovation.

The Task Lighting Edit

In the full guide, I’m sharing my specific “Designer Edits” for every corner of the home. Here are three of my favorite ways to add high-end character through lighting:

The Table Lamp Edit: This is where I love to play with the “high-low” mix. I often source pieces like the Pottery Barn Ellis Metal Table Lamp to give a space a sturdy, polished anchor that feels much more expensive than it is.

The Sconce Edit: When surface space is at a premium, I love a sconce. The Signature Hardware Baker Sconce is a personal favorite for its slim silhouette that adds an immediate bespoke-feel to a hallway or vanity.

The Floor Lamp Edit: Floor lamps are the easiest way to turn a lonely armchair into a curated reading nook. For a timeless, subtle glow that anchors a room, look at the Brightech Montage Modern Floor Lamp.
