Let’s be honest: the laundry room is one of the hardest-working spaces in our homes. We spend a significant amount of time in this room, managing mountains of clothes and navigating the beautiful chaos of family life. Yet, it’s often one of the most forgotten spaces when it comes to design.
But why should it be?
As a mom and designer, I believe that even (especially!) our chore spaces deserve thoughtful attention. A beautiful, organized laundry room won’t magically make the work disappear, but it can absolutely transform your outlook, making a necessary task feel a little less daunting. It’s all about creating an intentional space that brings a bit of joy and order to your day.
Ready to take your laundry room from purely functional to beautifully purposeful? Here are some of my best tips for impactful, achievable updates.
1. Elevate the Atmosphere with Sound & Style
A simple, intentional change can make a huge difference in your mood.
- Bring in the Music: A good speaker is a small addition with a huge impact. Listening to a favorite podcast or a great playlist makes the time fly by.
- Add a Personal Touch: A simple framed piece of art or a sign with a witty quote can make you smile every time you walk in. These small details add personality and remind you that every corner of your home can be a source of happiness.

2. Upgrade the Details with Hardware & Lighting
Small details have the power to completely transform a space.
- Switch Out Hardware: Replacing your cabinet pulls and knobs is one of my favorite design tricks. It’s a quick, affordable change that makes a significant visual difference. A new finish—like brass, matte black, or brushed nickel—can instantly elevate the entire room and give it a fresh, updated feel.
- Install New Lighting: A new light fixture is a design game-changer. Not only will it make your space feel brighter and more functional, but it’s also an opportunity to add a touch of personality. Since it’s a smaller space, you can have a little more fun with a unique shape or style. Additionally, if your laundry room has cabinets, adding under-cabinet puck lights can brighten up your workspace so you can actually see those tough stains and treat them!

3. Infuse Color & Personality
Your laundry room is the perfect canvas for a bold design move you might hesitate to make in a larger living area.
- Paint It Bold: A new wall color can bring so much life and energy to the room. Consider a shade you love but wouldn’t use in other spaces—a deep, moody blue, a cheerful emerald green, or a soft peach. Even in a small space, a bold color makes a huge impact and keeps you feeling inspired despite the work at hand.
- Wallpaper Magic: If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, peel-and-stick wallpaper or a fun backsplash adds an incredible layer of pattern and texture.

4. Create Order & Function
A beautiful space is nothing without organization.
- Declutter with Intention: Make sure everything has a place. Use hooks for hanging items, a fold-down drying rack, or a stylish wall-mounted basket for laundry supplies.
- Smart Storage: In a small laundry room, collapsible laundry baskets are a brilliant solution. You can use them when you need them and then neatly stow them away when not in use, keeping the space looking tidy and open. As always, containers and bins can help keep things organized.

I can’t help with the actual laundry, but I can help you transform your laundry room from a forgotten chore space to a beautiful and functional part of your home. Enjoy your newly updated space!
