10 Amazing Storage Ideas for Small Spaces

When you live in a small space, it can feel like you need a miracle to find the space you need to store all your stuff. My first tip for you is to cut the clutter. But what to do once you’ve done that and you still don’t have the space you need? Here are the ideas you need to carve out some more space no matter your square footage. Trust me, you have more storage space than you think.

1. Cut the Clutter

This has to be the first step whenever you feel like you don’t have enough storage space. Chances are, you have more items than you need. So purge and donate whatever you don’t need. In a small space, it may make more sense for you to have less and buy more items when you need them instead of storing the extras.

2. Baskets and More Baskets

Putting a basket on your shelf to corral all your wires will look a whole lot better than just leaving all your wires lying around. You’ll also be able to take advantage of vertical space on your shelf if you use the basket than if you just dump on the shelf. Beauty and functionality? I’ll take it 🙂

3. Wall Hooks

No coat closet? No problem! Use wall hooks to store your purse, coats, gloves etc. Basically anything you would keep in a coat closet or mudroom. For more ideas to create a mudroom when you have none, click here.

4. Store in Plain Site

For items that look pretty in canisters like flour, sugar etc., store these in plain site.

5. Hide the Less Pretty Things

However, not all your stuff is pretty enough to be stored in plain site. For the less pretty items you own, store them in closets, in a storage bench like this or under a platform bed like this one. This is the bed I personally have and love! You can store so much underneath it! You’ll need a bed skirt if you want your under-bed storage to be hidden.

6. Add Floating Furniture

A floating shelf like this one takes advantage of vertical space and is easy on the eye. Plus they’re super inexpensive and easy to install. A win all around. In a small space, floating furniture like a floating cabinet helps to open up the space visually which is always a plus. Additionally, in a pinch, you can also put baskets underneath for even more storage.

7. Double Duty Furniture

You may not have enough square footage to create your dream home office. But a secretary desk like this one can give you the space you need to work in peace. Adding a stool to your entryway console table can also give you some much needed work space. Instead of a console table, buy a buffet piece with storage cabinets. Think outside the box and imagine new uses for your existing furniture.

8. Vertical Storage

Taking advantage of vertical space can give you space that was previously unusable. Using a hanging shoe organizer like this on the back of a door can give you space for cans, cleaning supplies or small toys.

9. Think Outside the Box

Storing your suitcases out of the way and don’t use them very often? Use them to store seasonal clothes. Having a small space requires you to think creatively about how to get the most out of your space.

10. Decant

It may seem counter intuitive but decanting many of your items can save you space. This is because packaging often takes up a lot of space and is also inefficient a lot of the time. For example, if you decant your flour into a canister, it will fit into your pantry much better since it will be more square shaped. Additionally, leaving your flour in the bag it comes in makes it super annoying to actually use for baking. That’s why I’m a big fan of decanting as much as you can.

I hope you find something on this list that will help you organize your space better. If not, you know who to call 🙂
