5 Common Design Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

These are the common mistakes that I notice over and over again in people’s homes. Read on so you can avoid these pitfalls.

1. Buying furniture sets.

Please, please, don’t buy that love seat, sofa, and chair combo. There is virtually no way to make it look good. And that bedroom set? Don’t do that either. If you want a space that looks thoughtfully curated, source your furniture from different places instead of buying sets.

2. Hanging too short curtains.

Please get curtains that run floor to ceiling or close to that. Getting curtains that hang way too high above the floor cuts off the room and makes it feel awkward. Hanging curtains high up visually raises your ceiling height which is almost always a good thing. Click here to learn more about curtains.

3. Following fads.

Please don’t buy everything in your house just because it’s in style. Buy pieces you love! If you decorate solely based on trends, will you like your home once the next trend starts?

4. Having a too-small rug.

I see this way too often and it pains me. Thinking about buying that 4 x 6 rug for your living room? Please don’t. It will make your room look choppy and disconnected. At first glance, the room below doesn’t look too bad. But why is the all furniture not on the rug? It looks awkward. To avoid these as well as other rug issues, see my post here.

5. Not adding personal touches.

You don’t want your home to feel like a museum! You want it to be clear that you live there. This is your home and your story. Tell it.

Hope this post helps you avoid these frequent design mistakes!
