An Inside Look at the Design Process

One of the first questions a client will ask is “What goes on behind the scenes?” I know it makes everyone feel more comfortable when they know what to expect. So for all those thinking of hiring a designer or just those wondering “What does an interior designer even do anyway?” this post is for you.

Of course, each project is unique and has its own flow but this is generally what to expect with my full-service package.

STEP 1:

We kick off the project with a free design consultation to get a feel for the space and to hear what you want to get out of it. During the consultation, we’ll get to know each other a little bit. We’ll fill out a style questionnaire together and hear what you want out of the space, your budget, your deadlines, etc.

STEP 2:

Once the letter of agreement is signed, you’ll send me some inspiration photos of rooms that you like. This will help me to “get inside your head” and figure out what your style is. Next, I’ll take detailed site measurements. This means I will note every outlet, air vent, window, etc. to make sure the furniture we choose will fit into the space. I’ll also take detailed photos of the space as well as any furniture you plan on keeping. Using this information, I’ll create a floor plan of the space.

STEP 3:

I will take what I’ve learned about you and your style and turn it into a beautiful design for your home. This part is definitely the most time-consuming part of a project and also the part where there is so much behind-the-scenes work. It can be hard since there aren’t always immediate results at this stage. But trust me, it will be worth the wait! We’ll start making product selections and furniture plans that you will approve as we go through the process. Your feedback is essential so that I can be sure I am translating your style into the space of your dreams. Once you approve items, I will take care of the ordering for you so that you don’t have that headache.

STEP 4:

Once everything is approved and ordered, the most exciting part happens-construction and installation of all furniture and accessories. I have trusted vendors that will help make your space as gorgeous as it can be! All your patience will be rewarded when we finally get to that end goal- a beautiful space for your family that brings you joy now and for years to come.

I hope this post helps you understand the design process better and gives you the confidence you might be looking for to work with an interior designer.
